Freshman Carter Fayhee (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) scored a season-best 24 points, but the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team came up just short in a 73-70 loss at Kishwaukee on Thursday to being the Arrowhead Conference portion of its schedule.

The defending co-champion Chargers (12-6, 0-1) took a 32-31 edge into halftime, but the Kougars (11-6, 1-0) used a big free throw edge in the second half to help pull ahead. Kishwaukee finished 11 of 21 from the line in the second (17 of 32 for the game), while Sandburg made 4 of 5 attempts after halftime. The Chargers finished 9 for 14 from the stripe for the contest.

Fayhee scored 15 of his 24 after halftime for his best scoring night as a Charger. He surpassed his previous high of 17 points on Nov. 30 against Missouri State-West Plains.

Sophomore forward Deandrey Robinson added 14 points for Sandburg, and freshmen Noah Young (Colfax, Ill./Ridgeview) and Scott Gowan (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East) each scored 10.

Robert Johnson scored 21 to lead Kishwaukee.

Sandburg will play its conference home opener at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against fellow defending champion Highland.
